Roger A. Smith, CPP

About Mr. Smith

Roger A. Smith, CPP is currently helping Payroll and HR organizations improve their business processes, management, communications and utilization of technology.  His consulting engagements include Payroll and HR Strategic Planning, Process Improvement, Best Practices, Training, Communications, Benchmarking, Change Management and Technology Assessment. 

He has over 35 years of Payroll and Human Resource business process and information technology experience .  He has extensive training and experience in process improvement, strategic planning, payroll best practices, business and Information Technology management, benchmarking, change management, quality management, sales and numerous technical areas. 

Mr. Smith holds a B.A. degree in Economics from Oakland University.  He has maintained Certified Payroll Professional (CPP) status since 1988.  His previous experience includes leading a team responsible for processing over ten million payroll checks and deposit notices annually.

Mr. Smith is very active in the Detroit Chapter of the American Payroll Association (APA). His responsibilities in the Chapter have included Chapter President, Secretary, numerous speaking engagements, and chairing the Michigan Statewide Conference for Payroll Professionals.  He was named Michigan Payroll Professional of the Year in 1989 and 1998.  He currently serves as the Past President of the Chapter, on the Statewide Meeting Committee, and maintains the Chapter website.

A longtime APA member, Mr. Smith has also been active on the national level.  He has presented numerous workshops at the APA's Annual Congress, Payroll Leadership Conferences, and numerous Statewide Payroll Conferences, and has presented payroll-related workshops to many other groups. 

He currently chairs the Emerging Technologies Committee of the Strategic Payroll Leadership Task Force and serves on the CPP Certification Board and the Board of Contributing Writers for Membership Publications.  In 1990 he received the APA's Meritorious Service Award and in 1997 he received APA’s Special Recognition Award. In 2001, Roger was named the APA’s Payroll Man of the Year.
