Roger A. Smith, CPP is currently helping Payroll and HR organizations improve their business processes, management, communications and utilization of technology.  His consulting engagements include Payroll and HR Strategic Planning, Process Improvement, Software/Service Selection, Best Practices, Training, Communications, Benchmarking, Change Management, Compliance and Technology Assessment.  

Mr. Smith has extensive training and experience in process improvement, strategic planning, payroll best practices, business and Information Technology management, benchmarking, change management, quality management, sales and numerous technical areas.  

Prior to founding PayrollProf.com he spent over 35 years in supporting Payroll and Human Resource technology and business processes.   This experience includes

•   Systems development projects in Payroll, Pension, Human Resources, and Benefits applications
•   A benchmarking/process improvement project which achieved a savings of 50% in administrative costs, and
•   Responsibility for a payroll systems organization which paid over 1,000,000 employees and retirees.

Mr. Smith holds a B.A. degree in Economics from Oakland University.  He has maintained Certified Payroll Professional (CPP) status since 1988.  

A longtime member, Mr. Smith has been very active in the American Payroll Association (APA). He has presented workshops at the APA's Annual Congress, Payroll Leadership Conferences, numerous Statewide Payroll Conferences and Chapter meetings, and has also presented payroll-related workshops to other groups.

He currently serves as APA Vice-President, chairs the Emerging Technologies Committee of the Strategic Payroll Leadership Task Force and is a member of the Board of Contributing Writers for Membership Publications. In 1990 he received the APA's Meritorious Service Award and in 1997 he received APA’s Special Recognition Award. In 2001, Roger was named the APA’s Payroll Man of the Year.

Mr. Smith is also active in the Detroit Chapter of the APA. His responsibilities in the Chapter have included Chapter President, Secretary, Chapter Coordinator, numerous speaking engagements, and chairing the Michigan Statewide Conference for Payroll Professionals. He was named Michigan Payroll Professional of the Year in 1989, 1998, and 2009. He currently serves as a Past President of the Chapter, member of the Statewide Meeting Committee, and is responsible for maintaining the Chapter website.
